1. Grammar I: Order within the Family

Use of (番)目 to count 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.

 

私は　一番上 = Oldest

私は上から二番目 = 2nd Oldest

まん中　= Right in the Middle

私は下から二番目 = 2nd Youngest

一番下　= the Youngest

 

So, we when we use the 目 kanji, we are using Ordinal Numbers: ~番目 = First, Second, Third

Question:　何番目　ですか？ Which number are you?

一番目 = the first

二番目 = the second

三番目 = the third
